Edit a personalization

adfit writes the first version of every personalization, but you can change it yourself: edit the wording, swap an image, add or remove a change, and adjust the baseline adfit measures against. This guide covers the change editor. Who sees a personalization is a separate topic, covered in Targeting and the test link.

Open the editor

Open a personalization from the Personalizations list. In the Changes card, each page has an Edit button that opens the change editor for that page. The editor slides in from the right, titled Edit changes for the page's address.

Editing never touches your live page

If the personalization you are editing is already published, adfit does not change your live page while you work. The editor shows Editing this creates a draft at the top, with the note Your published page stays live until you publish the new draft.

  • On a published personalization the save button reads Save draft. Your edits go into a new draft; your live page stays exactly as it is until you publish that draft.
  • On a draft the button reads Save changes and simply updates the draft.

Publishing the draft

When you are happy with a draft, publish it the same way as any other personalization: see Personalizations. Publishing the new draft replaces the version that was live, which moves to your earlier versions.

Edit a text change

Each text change in the editor has:

  • Original: the text adfit expects to find on your live page. This is the baseline and is read-only here (see Update the baseline).
  • New text: the wording adfit shows a matching visitor. Type your replacement here.

Open Technical details on a row to see the element adfit changes. That selector is fixed to the element you picked and cannot be typed by hand, so a change always points at a real element on your page.

Add a change

Press Add change to open the element picker inside the editor. It lists the same text and clickable elements as the page elements view.

  1. Find the element

    Scroll or use Filter elements to find the element you want to change.

  2. Use it

    Press Use this element. adfit adds a new text change for it, already filled with the element's current text as the baseline, and puts your cursor in the New text field. An element you have already added shows Already added and cannot be picked twice.

If adfit has not read the page yet

The picker needs a page adfit has read. If it has not, the panel says so and offers a link to Pages so you can capture the page first. See Pages.

You can change up to 20 elements on one page. Once you reach that limit, Add change is switched off and tells you the limit. The counter at the bottom of the editor shows how many of the 20 you have used.

Update the baseline

The Original text is the baseline adfit measures against, so it is not freely editable. To change it, press Update baseline on the row: adfit takes the current text of that element from the latest reading of your page as the new baseline.

If your live page changed since adfit last read it, a note appears: The live text changed. Update the baseline if the new text is correct. Check the wording, then update the baseline so adfit stays in step with your page.

Replace an image

A change marked Image swap shows the image adfit puts in for a matching visitor, with a thumbnail and the note adfit swaps this image for a matching visitor. Press Replace image to pick a different one from your image library.

  • Image swapping is part of the higher plans. If it is not included in your plan, Replace image is switched off and the editor notes Image swapping is not included in your current plan. See Image library and Plans & pricing.
  • If an image was removed from your library, the row shows This image is no longer available. Replace or remove it. adfit never drops it quietly: pick a new image or remove the row before you save.

Some older image changes cannot be edited here yet

A personalization that uses an older, address-based image cannot be edited in this editor yet. adfit leaves it exactly as it is and switches off Save so nothing is lost. To update it, regenerate the personalization instead.

Edit an inserted element

A change marked Added element inserts a brand new element before an existing one, rather than changing existing text. You can edit its text and choose its type (for example a paragraph or a heading). adfit notes that it inserts this element before the target and that the inserted element is not clickable.

Remove a change

Press Remove on a row to take that change out. Nothing is saved until you save the editor, so removing a row is easy to undo by closing the editor without saving.

Save your work

Press Save draft (or Save changes on a draft) to store your edits. adfit checks every change again as it saves. When it works, adfit confirms with Draft saved. and closes the editor.

If you try to close the editor with unsaved edits, adfit asks Discard your changes? so you do not lose work by accident. Choose Keep editing to go back, or Discard to close without saving.

Confidence, and why adfit made a change

Each personalization carries a confidence badge (High, Medium or Low confidence), and every change adfit wrote can show a short reason for why it fits the audience. Both are covered in Personalizations.
