Personalization
Review and publish
Nothing goes live on its own. This guide covers how to read a personalization, how to approve or discard the drafts adfit wrote for you, how to publish one page or many, when a page is actually live, and the limits that apply.
Review a personalization
Click a personalization to open it. The header shows its title, the status of the page you are on (Draft, Applying, Live or Archived: see What the status words mean), where it came from, the page it applies to, and an Updated date so you can see when it last changed. Below the header a row of tabs lists every page of the personalization. Below that you will find:
- Changes: each change adfit applied, with the original text and the new version side by side. Image swaps are marked with an Image swap label, and many changes carry a short reason for why adfit chose them. Each page has an Edit button so you can change the text and images yourself: see Edit a personalization.
- Targeting: who sees this personalization. It includes a Test link you can open to preview the personalized page yourself, the adfit parameter (
?adfit=and the personalization's token) that triggers it, an optionalutm_campaignmatch, and the page path it applies to. The test link starts working when you publish; on a draft the card notes This link becomes active after you publish this personalization. Press Edit targeting to change who sees it: see Targeting and the test link. - Persona: the persona this personalization is for. A personalization without a persona lets you assign one once with Assign persona. After that it can't be changed here: to use a different persona, generate a new personalization from the Personas tab. When you publish a personalization made from an ad, adfit adds the persona from that ad to your personas, as long as you have room: see Personas. The header also shows the depth it was created with, for example Created with depth: Balanced.
- Source ad: if this personalization was created from an ad, a From ad: link shows the file it came from and takes you straight back to that ad. The Personalizations list shows the same link in its source column. A personalization that adfit suggested without an ad or a persona shows Suggested by adfit. If the ad or persona it came from was removed, it shows Ad or persona removed.
Images on this page
Under the changes, the card Images on this page lists the images adfit found in its stored copy of this page. Each tile shows the image, a short description (its alt text or file name, or No description) and a Replace button. If adfit has not stored the page yet, the card says adfit has not stored this page yet, so it cannot list its images.
- Replace opens Replace image, which says Pick an image from your library. Visitors who see this personalization get it instead of this image. The pictures come from your image library. Only this one image changes; all your other changes stay as they are. On a draft adfit confirms with Image replaced in this draft. and marks the tile Replaced in this draft. On a live page without a draft, adfit puts the replacement into a new draft, takes you there and confirms with Image replaced in a new draft. Your published version stays in place until you publish the new draft. Once a version with a replaced image is live, its tile reads Replaced in the live version. To edit the image the way you edit any change, see Replace an image.
- Images from another site (for example a picture your page loads from a partner) do not load on their own. The tile shows Image from another site with the name of that site and a Load image button, and adfit contacts that site only after you press it. adfit shows images from your own site and from well-known website platforms right away.
- An animated image shows a still picture with the label GIF and a Play animation button, which turns into Stop animation while it plays. If a picture cannot be loaded, the tile says Preview unavailable and Replace still works.
- The card shows up to 50 images. A page with more says adfit shows the first 50 images on this page.
Sometimes Replace is switched off, and the tile says why, one reason at a time:
- Your plan has no image swapping: Image swapping is not included in your current plan. While your subscription is paused or a payment is open, the tile says what to do instead, for example Resume your subscription to upload and swap images. See Plans & pricing.
- A live page that already has a draft: This page has a draft. Replace images in the draft. A link View draft takes you there.
- The image already has another type of change: This image already has another type of change. To edit it, use Edit under Changes.
- The page has the most changes it can have: You can change up to 20 elements on one page. To replace this image, first remove a change under Changes.
An empty card says adfit found no images it can replace on this page. If the list cannot be loaded, it says adfit could not load the images on this page. with a Try again button.
How confident adfit is
The header carries a confidence badge for the whole personalization: High, Medium or Low confidence. It is adfit's own read of how well the changes fit, shown as a simple level rather than a score. Treat a lower level as a reason to review the changes more closely, not as a problem in itself.
What adfit did with your changes
Under the changes, adfit may show up to three short groups so you always know what went live and why:
- Applied with adjustments: adfit made the change but adapted it, for example shortening the text so it fits the element.
- Things adfit noticed: neutral notes worth knowing, for example that the original text on your page changed since adfit last read it.
- Not applied: changes adfit chose to leave out, with a reason for each (see below).
Changes adfit did not apply
adfit only makes changes it can apply safely, so the count next to Changes is what actually goes live. If adfit left anything out, a Not applied section appears under the changes with a short, plain reason for each one, for example:
- adfit could not safely identify the element on your page.
- The new text was too long for that element.
- An image did not fit the shape of the original image.
- An image is no longer available, or image swapping is not part of your current plan.
- Price statements are never changed. adfit leaves out any change that adds, alters or removes a price, a discount percentage or a price comparison. If every change of a run is of that kind, the run ends with adfit only suggested changes to prices, and prices are never changed. Try again.
- The change swaps an image, but the matching element on your page is not an image.
Your other changes still apply
A change adfit leaves out never affects the rest. adfit applies every change it safely can and skips only the ones it cannot, so a matching visitor still sees everything that did go live.
Keep or discard a draft
Drafts that adfit wrote for you carry the mark Awaiting approval: the one from an analysis, one generated from a persona, one created from an ad suggestion, an extended page or a regenerated one. The mark sits next to the status, on the page tab, and as a count on the personalization row in the list. It is a prompt to look at the draft, not a status that blocks anything.
On a draft with the mark, the header offers Publish, Keep and Discard:
- Keep: you looked at the page and want to keep it. The mark goes away and adfit confirms with Page kept. A page you kept counts as yours: a new analysis of the same ad does not replace it.
- Discard: asks Discard this page? and, depending on where the draft came from, tells you how to get it back. For a draft from an ad, that is You can create it again from your ad on the Ads page. For a draft from a persona, You can generate it again from the persona. That uses one AI task. For a regenerated draft, The version before it stays under Archived versions, and you can restore it. If it is the only page of the personalization, discarding it deletes the personalization too, and the dialog says so.
Editing the draft, changing its targeting or publishing it also removes the mark. A site can hold up to 100 drafts: see The draft adfit writes for you.
Publish and unpublish
You can publish or unpublish from two places: open a personalization and use the Publish or Unpublish button in its header, or open the actions menu at the end of its row in the list. Each action asks you to confirm first.
In the publish dialog you can tick Don't show this explanation again for this site. From then on, Publish goes live without the dialog. adfit still asks you to confirm whenever publishing would replace a version that is already live, and Unpublish always asks.
When a page is live
Right after you publish, the page shows Applying. adfit is putting the version on your site, and visitors who match its targeting see it within about a minute. adfit confirms with, for example, Published 1 page. It goes live on your site within about a minute. and, when one page went live, offers View on your site; with several pages of one personalization it offers View personalization. When that time has passed, the badge changes to Live on its own, without a reload.
Unpublish takes it back down: visitors see your original page again. The version moves to Archived versions, and adfit says so with a View archived action. You can bring it back at any time: see Archived versions and restore.
Publish or unpublish several at once
Tick the checkboxes next to the pages you want in the list. A selection bar appears with Publish, Unpublish and Delete: choose one to apply it to everything you selected. The checkbox in the table header selects every page in view at once. The same bar also lets you update the baseline and export the selection. Selecting a whole personalization instead offers only tags and export, and selecting personalizations and pages together is not possible: see Bulk actions and export.
When you publish several at once, adfit counts first and shows Publish {x} of {n}? if some of your selection cannot go live. Archived versions are skipped (1 archived personalization is skipped. Use Restore to bring an archived version back.), and ones that are already published are named. The numbers in the dialog (how many personalizations, what changes, the A/B mix) count only the drafts that would actually go live. A draft for a page that already has a live version replaces it, and the old version moves to Archived versions, exactly as when you publish a single page.
If some of the drafts you are about to publish are still Awaiting approval, the dialog says so first, for example 1 of these 3 pages has not been reviewed yet. and adfit wrote it, and it is marked "Awaiting approval". Publishing stays your click: adfit never publishes a draft on its own.
If nothing in the selection can be published, the dialog is titled Nothing to publish and the button is off. A line tells you why, for example 2 pages are already published. The hint to use Restore appears only when your selection includes archived versions. Publishing several pages of one personalization together matters for an A/B test: see Generate for other pages.
When a draft is already waiting
If a page you unpublish already has an unreviewed draft in the same personalization (adfit may have created that draft automatically), the dialog points it out first. You can still choose Archive anyway: the live version moves to Archived versions and the draft stays in your list until you publish or delete it. When you unpublish several at once, the ones without a waiting draft are archived right away; the dialog then tells you how many are still published, and Archive anyway archives those too, while Cancel keeps them published (the ones already archived stay archived).
Your publish limit
Each plan sets how many personalizations you can have live per site at once. On Starter that is 5 live personalizations; Growth and Agency are unlimited. Drafts never count toward the limit, so you can prepare drafts up to the draft limit per site and publish the best ones.
A personalization counts once, however many of its pages are live. Publishing more pages of a personalization that is already live does not count against this limit, up to 25 live pages per personalization. Once a personalization has that many live pages, the publish dialog says A personalization can have up to 25 live pages. Unpublish a page to publish a different one.
If you reach the limit of live personalizations, unpublish one or upgrade your plan: see Plans & pricing. If the limit is reached, Publish now in the restore dialog is switched off and says so, for example Your plan allows 5 live personalizations per site. Unpublish one, then restore this version. Restore as draft still works.
